Am White Day wird Weiße Schokolade verschenkt

Als White Day (jap. ホワイトデー, Howaito dē, dt. „Weißer Tag“) bezeichnet man in Japan den 14. März jeden Jahres. Er ist 1977 als Dankestag durch einen Konditor ins Leben gerufen worden, an dem die Männer sich für die Geschenke, die sie zum Valentinstag erhalten haben, ebenfalls mit Geschenken bedanken können. Dies geschieht normalerweise in Form von Schokolade, Süßwaren oder anderen kleinen Präsenten. Man kann davon ausgehen, dass normalerweise sich solch ein Tag nicht überregional durchgesetzt hätte, allerdings ist diese Idee von diversen Süßwarenherstellern aufgegriffen und über die Jahre massiv unterstützt worden, so dass er regelmäßig öffentlich beachtet wurde. Mittlerweile ist dieser Feiertag fest im öffentlichen Bewusstsein verankert. Seinen Namen erlangte der White Day dadurch, dass die angesprochenen Unternehmen sich vor allem auf weiße Süßwaren (Weiße Schokolade, Marshmallows) als Geschenke konzentrierten.

Man kann dabei zwei Arten Schokolade unterscheiden. Bei Hommei-Schokolade (本命チョコ, hommei choko, dt. „Schokolade für den Liebling“) handelt es sich um ein Geschenk an jemandem im klassischen Valentinssinne, also an seine/n Ehepartner/in, Freund/in, Geliebte/n. Die Giri-Schokolade (義理チョコ, giri choko, dt. „Pflichtschokolade“) dagegen verschenkt man aus einer sozialen Verpflichtung heraus an Klassenkameraden, Mitarbeiter und Kollegen. Diese beiden Formen unterscheiden sich vor allem in dem Aufwand und der Anzahl der Geschenke.
