Der Wettbewerb Wildlife Photographer of the Year ist der renommierteste Naturfotowettbewerb der Welt. Der Wettbewerb wurde 1964 vom BBC Wildlife Magazine (damals noch Animals) ins Leben gerufen. 1984 schloss sich das Magazin mit dem Natural History Museum zusammen und schufen den Wettbewerb in seiner heutigen Form. In verschieden Kategorien können sich Naturfotografen aus aller Welt bewerben.
Zum ersten Wettbewerb 1964 erhielt die Redaktion ca. 600 Einsendungen, 2008 waren es 32.350.
Die Preisgelder betragen 250 und 150 englische Pfund für die ersten beiden Sieger in den erwachsenen Kategorien und 250 und 150 englische Pfund in den drei Kategorien der Minderjährigen. Zusätzlich gibt es drei Special Awards, die mit 1000 Pfund dotiert sind (Stand: 2008).
Erstmals im Jahre 2009 gab es kein Siegerbild. Dem Fotografen José Luis Rodriguez wurde der ursprünglich verliehene Preis für das Bild eines springenden iberischen Wolfes nachträglich aberkannt, da es einen zahmen Wolf zeigt.[1]
