William Douglas, 1. Marquess of Douglas and 11. Earl of Angus

William Douglas (* 1589; † 19. Februar 1660) war ein schottischer Adliger, 11. Earl of Angus und 1. Marquess of Douglas.

Leben

William war ein Sohn von William Douglas, 10. Earl of Angus, und dessen Gemahlin Elizabeth Oliphant. Er folgte seinem Vater 1611 als Earl of Angus.

Nach Jahren der Treue zum schottischen König während des Bürgerkriegs wurde William 1633 zum Marquess of Douglas erhoben. Er bekleidete auch das Amt des Chief Lieutenant of the Borders.

Der Marquess beteiligte sich 1649 an der militärischen Expedition von James Graham, 1. Marquess of Montrose, kämpfte in der Schlacht von Philiphaugh (bei Selkirk), konnte hier zwar fliehen, geriet aber in Gefangenschaft, aus der er später gegen ein Lösegeld wieder entlassen wurde.

Nachkommen

William Douglas war zuerst verheiratet mit Margaret (1585–1623), Tochter des Claude Hamilton, 1. Lord Paisley mit der er folgende Kinder hatte:

  • Margaret (1601–1660), heiratete Alexander Seton, 1. Viscount Kingston
  • Jean (1602–1669), heiratete John Hamilton, 1. Lord Bargeny
  • Grizel (1603–1623), heiratete Master William Carmichael
  • Archibald (1609–1655), 1. Earl of Ormonde
  • James (1617–1645), gefallen in Douai

In zweiter Ehe heiratete er Mary (1600–1674), Tochter des George Gordon, 1. Marquess of Huntly. Aus dieser Ehe hatte er folgende Kinder:

  • Henrietta (1633–1673), heiratete James Johnstone, 1. Earl of Annandale and Hartfell
  • Catherine (* 1633/41), heiratete Sir William Ruthven
  • William (1634–1694), Earl of Selkirk, 3. Duke of Hamilton
  • George (1635–1692), Earl of Dunbarton
  • Isabel (* 1642), heiratete 1657 William Douglas, 1. Duke of Queensberry
  • Jean (* 1643/55), heiratete James Drummond, 4. Earl of Perth
  • Lucy († 1713), heiratete Robert Maxwell, 4. Earl of Nithsdale
