Windows Graphics Foundation (WGF) wird der Nachfolger der API von DirectX 9 für das Microsoft-Betriebssystem Windows Vista.
Neusten, bislang unbestätigten Informationen zufolge soll WGF nun allerdings doch wieder in "D3D10" umbenannt werden (DirectX9 enthält D3D9 als Grafikschnittstelle), soll aber eine völlig neue Architektur besitzen, die nicht mit DirectX 9 kompatibel ist. DirectX9 wird nach außen hin weiterhin in seiner bisherigen Form enthalten sein, allerdings wurde sehr viel am Overhead gearbeitet, so dass bisherige Spiele auch davon profitieren sollten und prinzipiell unter Vista schneller laufen sollten. Auch die Gerüchte, dass Vista OpenGL nur noch durch eine sehr langsame Emulation unterstützen soll, sind falsch. Die Grafikkartenhersteller werden weiterhin OpenGL wie bisher unterstützen können.
WGF bzw D3D10 wird als größte Neuerung Geometry-Shader voraussetzen. Ein Chip wird sich übrigens nur WGF-kompliant nennen dürfen, wenn er alle Features der Spezifikationen unterstützt.
Ferner wird es D3D10 nur für Windows Vista geben und nicht für Windows XP oder sonstige Vorgängerprodukte. Gerüchten zufolge sollte eine „abgespeckte“ Version von D3D10 Namens DirectX 9.0L für Windows XP veröffentlicht werden. Wie sich herausstellte, handelt es sich dabei jedoch um den alten Namen für D3D9Ex, dem DirectX 9.0-Layer für Windows Vista.
