Das Zentrum für Marine Tropenökologie (ZMT) in Bremen erfasst und bewertet die regionalen und globalen Auswirkungen von weltweitem Klimawandel, Städtebau, Tourismusprojekten usw. auf Mensch und Biodiversität in tropischen Küstenregionen und ihren Ökosystemen, um an diesen eine umweltgerechte Entwicklung zu sichern, da sie durch oben genannte Entwicklungen besonders in Anspruch genommen werden. 1991 wurde das ZMT vom Verein zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung in der Freien Hansestadt Bremen (VFwF e.V.) gegründet. Es ist ein sog. An-Institut der Universität Bremen und Mitglied bei MARUM und dem KDM (Konsortium Deutscher Meeresforschung).

Im Mai 2006 hat der Wissenschaftsrat die Aufnahme des ZMT in die Leibniz-Gemeinschaft (WGL) empfohlen. Nach der Aufnahme zum 1. Januar 2009 ist es damit im Land Bremen, dessen Bremerhavener Schifffahrtsmuseum schon 1980 in die WGL eintrat, die zweite Leibniz-Einrichtung.

Aufgaben

Die Aufgaben des ZMT (nach eigenem Verständnis) sind:

  • Planung und Durchführung von Partnerschaftsprojekten zum besseren Verständnis mariner tropischer Ökosysteme im Hinblick auf ihren Schutz und ihre nachhaltige Entwicklung.
  • Ausbildung und Lehre auf dem Gebiet aquatischer Tropenökologie und im Aufbau wissenschaftlicher Kapazität im Rahmen von Kooperationen mit tropischen Partnerländern. Dazu gehört der Studiengang für Marine Tropenökologie (International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology) ISATEC.
  • Koordination und Kommunikation zwischen Wissenschaftlern, Institutionen und Organisationen im Hinblick auf tropenökologische Themen.
