Black Oak Arkansas ist eine US-amerikanische Southern-Rock-Band, die sich nach ihrem Heimatort Black Oak, Arkansas benannt hat. Die Band erreichte den Höhepunkt ihrer Bekanntheit in den 1970er Jahren, als sie zehn Alben in den Charts platzieren konnten. Der Stil der Band wird geprägt vom Spiel mehrerer Gitarren und der kratzigen Stimme des Sängers Jim "Dandy" Mangrum.

Bandgeschichte

Die Band, die sich ursprünglich The Knowbody Else nannte, gruppierte sich 1965 in Black Oak, Arkansas. Die Gründungsmitglieder waren James Mangrum (Gesang), Rickie Reynolds (Gitarre), Stanley Knight (Gitarre), Harvey Jett (Gitarre), Pat Daugherty (Bass) und Wayne Evans (Schlagzeug). Das Debütalbum erschien 1969.

1970 benannte sich die Band nach ihrem Heimatort um und veröffentlichte das erste Album unter diesem Namen. In den folgenden Jahren nahm sie weitere Alben auf. Das vierte, High on the Hog, erreichte Position 52 der Billboard-Charts und war somit ein kommerzieller Erfolg für die Band. Das letzte Album der Band in fast ursprünglicher Besetzung erschien 1975.

Zwei Jahre später formierten Jim Dandy Mangrum und Jimmy Henderson die Band um sich mit neuen Mitgliedern und nannten diese Black Oak. Seit dieser Zeit wechselte die Besetzung der Band beständig. Der einzige der ursprünglichen Besetzung ist James Mangrum
