A Certain Ratio

A Certain Ratio ist eine britische Band aus Manchester, die 1977 gegründet wurde. Sie entstammen dem Umfeld des Independentlabels „Factory Records“ (bekannt durch Joy Division, New Order, etc.). A Certain Ratio klingen auf ihren ersten Veröffentlichungen wie eine Nachfolgeband von Joy Division. Nach einem Trip nach New York im Jahre 1980 entwickeln sie sich schnell in Richtung Funk. Das Album „To Each“ (1981) wird geprägt durch afrikanische Percussion, funky Drums und Bass sowie Grabesstimmung im Stile der Joy Division. Die englische Musikpresse ist begeistert, gute Kritiken häufen sich. Nach der Veröffentlichung des Albums „Sextet“, was den Sound vom Erfolgsalbum fortführt, verlässt Sänger Simon Topping die Band. Diese wendet sich dann dem kompromisslosen Jazz-Funk-Sound zu. Im Laufe der Jahre nähern sie sich immer weiter dem eingängigen Popsound mit Funk-Elementen zu. Heute ist die Band noch auf lockerem, wohl eher semiprofessionellem Niveau aktiv.
