Breaking the Habit ist ein Song der Band Linkin Park. Es ist die sechste und letzte Single ihres zweiten Studioalbums Meteora . Der Song wurde 2004 mit dem MTV VMA Viewer's Choice Award ausgezeichnet.

Hintergrund

Die Idee für das Stück war zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahmen schon über fünf Jahre alt. Der vorläufige Titel lautete Drawing, wurde aber von Shinoda erweitert. Das Lied Drawing, also das Demo von Breaking the Habit, ist auf der CD Underground 9-Demos zu hören.

Breaking the Habit unterscheidet sich klar von den anderen Liedern des Albums Meteora. Die Markenzeichen des Songs sind ungewohnt wenig verzerrte Gitarren und dafür eine komplette, lebhafte String Section.

Der Song wird ausschließlich von Leadsänger Chester Bennington gesungen. Das Lied handelt von Drogen und ist somit eng mit Bennington verbunden, da er in seiner Jugend Drogenprobleme hatte.

Regie für das Musikvideo führte Bandmitglied Joseph Hahn. Das Musikvideo besteht aus animierten Personen, Gebäuden etc. Sie wurden von Kazuto Nakazawa gezeichnet.
