District Attorney

Als District Attorney wird in den Vereinigten Staaten der Staatsanwalt eines Bundesstaates bezeichnet. Je nach Bundesstaat gibt es unterschiedliche Bezeichnungen für dieses Amt, so z.B. State's Attorney, County Attorney, County Prosecutor, u.a.

Der District Attorney ist in seinem jeweiligen Bezirk für die Verfolgung von einzelstaatlichen Straftaten zuständig. Da die Strafgewalt in den Vereinigten Staaten hauptsächlich Sache der einzelnen Bundesstaaten ist, verfolgen die District Attorneys die meisten Strafsachen. In den meisten Bundesstaaten wird der District Attorney vom Volk gewählt, es gibt aber auch die Möglichkeit der Ernennung.

Im US-amerikanischen Strafsystem gibt es weiterhin den United States Attorney, der für das Bundesrecht verantwortlich ist und auf lokaler Ebene grundsätzlich die Verfolgung von Bundesverbrechen bearbeitet. Die U.S. Attorneys werden vom Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten mit Zustimmung des Senats für eine Amtszeit von vier Jahren ernannt.
