Beim Drafting wird im Sport versucht, durch permanenten Wechsel bei der Führungsarbeit den Widerstand zu minimieren.

Dies kommt immer wieder bei Ausdauersportarten, wie Radfahren (z. B. Technik des Belgischen Kreisels), beim Schwimmen[1], beim Inlineskating oder Triathlon – wie auch im Motorsport zum Einsatz.
Der Einsatz von Drafting ist teilweise aber auch in den Regeln explizit untersagt und es muss ein Mindestabstand eingehalten werden. So ist beim Triathlon und beim Einzelzeitfahren das Windschattenfahren verboten und wird mit Disqualifikation bzw. Zeitstrafen bestraft, da es als Verfälschung der eigenen Leistung angesehen wird (nicht erlaubt ist die Zone der „Windschattenbox“, mit 5x2 Meter).

Mit Drafting kann teilweise der Windschatten des Führenden oder Vordermannes genutzt und dabei Kraft oder Treibstoff gespart werden. Im Wasser kann der Strömungswiderstand durch die Sogwirkung verringert werden

Drafting wird teilweise sehr kontrovers diskutiert - kann doch das Ausnutzen und Profitieren dieser begünstigenden Situation auch als unfair betrachtet werden. In anderen Kreisen wird es befürwortet und unter dem Teamaspekt immer weiter optimiert.
