Der Titel Duke of Exeter wurde im England des späten Mittelalters mehrmals vergeben, als Exeter die Hauptstadt von Devon war. Der erste Titelträger war ab 1397 John Holland, der Halbbruder des Königs Richard II.. Der Titel wurde bei der Thronbesteigung Heinrichs IV. zwei Jahre später für ungültig erklärt. Später wurde der Titel Thomas Beaufort, 1. Earl of Dorset, einem Onkel Heinrichs V. gegeben. Nach dem erbenlosen Tod des Dukes (1426) erhielt die Familie Holland den Titel zurück; mit der Anklage gegen den 3. Duke, zum Haus Lancaster zu gehören, war er verwirkt. Der 3. Duke starb 1475 ohne Erben. Seitdem wurde der Titel nicht wieder verliehen. Die Titel Marquess of Exeter und Earl of Exeter waren jedoch in Gebrauch.
