Sieben Schiffe der Royal Navy erhielten den Namen HMS Monmouth nach der walisischen Stadt in Monmouthshire; der Name bezieht sich auch auf James Scott, 1. Duke of Monmouth, dem „Schwarzen Herzog“ (engl. Black Duke), einen nichtehelichen Sohn von König Karl II. von England, englischer Thronprätendent, Feldherr und Führer der Monmouth Rebellion:

  • Die erste Linienschiff der 3. Klasse, das 1667 vom Stapel lief. 1700 wurde sie zu einem 66-Kanonen-Schiff umgebaut und 1742 erfolgte ein weiterer Umbau zu einem 70- Kanonen-Schiff. Erst nach 100 Jahren wurde sie 1767 abgebrochen.
  • Die dritte Fregatte der 5. Klasse, die 1828 als Panzerkreuzer der Monmouth- oder County-Klasse, der 1901 vom Stapel lief und 1914 mit der gesamten Besatzung im Seegefecht bei Coronel sank.
