World Fair Trade Organization

Die International Fair Trade Association, abgekürzt IFAT (heute: World Fair Trade Organization abgekürzt WFTO) (ehemals International Federation for Alternative Trade dt. Internationale Föderation für alternativen Handel), ist ein globales Netzwerk von Organisationen des Fairen Handels.

IFAT wächst seit ihrer Gründung 1989 stetig und hat im Jahr 2004 mehr als 200 Mitglieder aus 55 Ländern. Die Zusammensetzung der IFAT-Mitglieder ist weltumspannend zu nennen, denn sie vertreten Organisationen aus Ländern Asiens, Afrikas, Latein- und Nordamerikas, Europas, aus Australien und dem Pazifikraum.

Die IFAT-Mitglieder sind Produzenten-Kooperativen und -Vereinigungen, Export-Marketing-Gesellschaften, Importeure, Einzelhändler, nationalen regionales Fair-Trade-Netzwerke und Finanzinstitutionen, die der Fair-Trade-Bewegung angehören. Das Netzwerk IFAT repräsentiert demnach die gesamte Fair-Handels-Kette, vom Produkt bis hin zum Verkauf.

Aufgabe

Die Aufgabe von IFAT besteht darin, die sozialen Situationen benachteiligter Produzenten zu verbessern, die Zusammenarbeit von Fairhandelsorganisationen zu fördern und sich für eine größere Gerechtigkeit im Welthandel einzusetzen.

Geschichte

IFAT wurde im Jahre 1989 in den Niederlanden im Anschluss an eine Konferenz gegründet.

Seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre gab es regelmäßige Treffen der Fairhandelsorganisationen. Mitte der 1980er Jahre wurden die Produzenten der Waren für den Fairen Handel von der internationalen Schuldenkrise und den fallenden Rohstoffpreisen stark getroffen. Es wurde deutlich, dass man die Kooperationen unter allen am Fairen Handel beteiligten Organisationen auf internationaler Ebene verstärken musste, um größeren internationalen Einfluss zu erlangen.

Seit 1989 wuchs die IFAT stetig zu einem globalen Netzwerk heran. Die Produzenten von Fairhandelsprodukten gehören der IFAT seit 1991 an und machen gegenwärtig zwei Drittel ihrer Mitglieder aus.

IFAT ist Mitglied der Internationalen Fair Trade-Organisation FINE.
