Das Grabmal der Caecilia Metella (italienisch: Tomba di Cecilia Metella) gilt als eines der imposantesten Grabmonumente an der Via Appia Antica in Rom.

Geschichte

In der 1. Hälfte des 1. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. wurde es für die Tochter des Generals Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus und die Schwiegertochter Crassus' erbaut. Es handelt sich hierbei um einen auf einem 8 m hohen Sockel errichteten travertinverkleideten Rundbau mit einem Durchmesser etwa 20 m und einer Höhe von 11 m, mit einem Bukranionfries, der eigentlich die Basis für einen mit Erde gefüllten kegelförmigen Tumulus bilden sollte.

Caecilia Metellas Grabmal wurde im Mittelalter von römischen Adligen als Festung umgebaut. Hiervon zeugt noch heute die erhaltene Zinnenbekränzung.
