Cervetto

Giacomo Bassevi, detto il Cervetto (* um 1682 in Italien; † 14. Januar 1783 in London) war ein italienischer Cellist und Komponist.

Nach seiner Ausbildung wirkte er zunächst in Italien, ging dann aber 1728 nach England, wo er Mitglied des Drury Lane Theatre in London wurde, dessen Orchester er einige Jahre leitete. Später hatte er eine feste Anstellung im Opernorchester Händels.

Er schuf im wesentlichen Werke für ein bis drei Celli und Generalbaß. Durch zahlreiche Konzerte machte er sein Instrument in England, wo lange die Gambe eine dominierende Rolle hatte, bekannt. Sein Sohn James Cervetto (* 8. Januar 1748; † 5. Februar 1837), durch den Vater ausgebildet, war ebenfalls Cellist und Komponist.

Der Maler Johann Zoffany fertigte ein Ölporträt Cervettos an.
