Unter einem Knowledge Service versteht man das Bereitstellen von wissensbasierten Inhalten per Internet.

Im konkreten werden auf Basis eines spezifischen Informationsgebietes

  • Daten und Begrifflichkeiten (Im Sinne eines Lexikons)
  • Informationen (Im Sinne eines Kommentares mit wissenschaftlicher Fundierung)
  • Knowhow oder Knowledge(Im Sinne von erarbeiteten Lösungen, Gutachten, Benchmarks)
  • Experience oder "Wisdom" durch Beistellung eines "Subject Matter Experts"

erarbeitet und per Internetzugang angeboten.

Knowledge Service Providing folgt in der Arbeitsweise dem Leitbild der DIKW-Hierarchie, und ist damit eine Weiterentwicklung des kommerziellen Researchs welcher sich aber ausschließlich auf der Ebene "Knowhow" bewegt.

Beispiele dazu sind in der IT-Szene die Dienstleistungen der Gartner-Group.

Im weitesten Sinne zählen auch das Consulting oder das Knowledge-Process-Outsourcing zu dieser Kategorie. Hier aber konzentriert man seine Aktivitäten ausschließliche auf der Ebene Experience oder Wisdom, weist aber nicht nach, woher die Daten und zugrundeliegenden Informationen kommen. Ein Kowledge Service Provider unterscheidet sich von obengenannten kommerziellen Formen dadurch, dass er alle Ebenen seiner Disziplin abdeckt.
