Ein Chak Mo'ol in der Stadt Chichén Itzá

Als Chak Mo'ol (auch Chac Mool oder Chac M'ol; Maya etwa Roter Jaguar oder Großer Jaguar) wird eine bestimmte Art von Steinplastiken im Gebiet des Volkes der Maya bezeichnet. Der Name geht auf den französischen Archäologen Augustus Le Plongeon zurück, der ihn den Statuen 1875 zuwies. (Sie haben nichts mit dem wichtigen Maya-Gott Chaak zu tun.)

Bei einem Chak Mo'ol handelt es sich um eine Skulptur einer liegenden menschlichen Gestalt, die einerseits den Kopf zur Seite gedreht hat, andererseits sich auf ihre Ellenbögen stützt und gleichzeitig ihre Beine angewinkelt hält. Am Ort des Bauches hält sie entweder eine Schale oder es existiert eine Vertiefung. Es gibt Annahmen, dass diese zur Durchführung von Menschenopfern dienten.

Diese Figuren tauchen erst im Postklassikum Mesoamerikas auf. In dieser Zeit sind sie von Michoacán bis nach Nicaragua nachzuweisen.
