Opononi ist eine Siedlung im Far North Distrikt in der Region Northland auf der Nordinsel Neuseelands. Sie liegt am Ostufer der Mündung des Hokianga in die Tasmansee. Der State Highway 12 durchquert den Ort. Die nächstgelegenen Orte sind Omapere etwa 3 km südlich und Pakanae etwa 2 km nordöstlich. [1] Die Bevölkerung von Opononi und Omapere betrug beim Zensus 2006 477 Einwohner, was einen bedeutenden Rückgang um 120 Einwohner seit der letzten Zählung 2001 darstellt.[2]

Die Schule von Opononi, Oponi Area School ist eine koedukative Composite School für die Klassen 1 bis 15 und hatte 2009 ein decile rating von 2 und 205 Schüler.[3]

Im Meer vor dem Ort lebte im Sommer 1955/56 der zahme Delfin Opo, der in damals in Neuseeland beträchtliche Aufmerksamkeit erregte. Nach seinem Tod wurde er in dem Ort begraben und eine Skulptur aufgestellt. [4]
