Rope-a-Dope

Der Rope-a-dope ist eine Boxtaktik, die Muhammad Ali insbesondere auch beim Rumble in the Jungle gegen George Foreman zugeschrieben wird.

Technik

Der Rope-a-dope wird ausgeführt, indem der Boxer eine Abwehrhaltung einnimmt – bei Ali, indem er sich in die Seile hängte – und es dem Gegner erlaubt, Treffer zu landen, wodurch der Gegner ermüdet und Fehler begeht, welche der Boxer ausnutzt.[1][2]

Herkunft des Ausdrucks

Laut Angelo Dundee kam die Idee für die Strategie gegen Foreman vom Boxfotographen George Kalinsky, der sagte: „Sort of a dope on the ropes, letting Foreman swing away but, like in the picture, hit nothing but air.“ Der Publizist John Condon machte daraus dann den Ausdruck „rope-a-dope“.[3]
