Rothschildia jacobaeae (Walker, 1855) ist die Typusart der Gattung Rothschildia

Rothschildia ist eine Gattung der Schmetterlinge aus der Familie der Pfauenspinner (Saturniidae), deren Arten in Nord- und Südamerika von Kanada bis nach Argentinien verbreitet sind.

Merkmale

Die Flügelspannweite dieser großen Pfauenspinner beträgt 11 bis 13 Zentimeter. Typisches Merkmal sind die großen, durchscheinenden, dreieckigen oder ovalen Bereiche auf den Flügeln. Neben diesen „Fenstern“ besitzen die Flügel bräunlich gekräuselte Schatten, die von einer unregelmäßigen weißen Linie durchbrochen sind. Diese zieht sich auf Vor- und Hinterflügel genau hinter den durchscheinenden Dreiecken. Die reifen Raupen sind sehr oft grün und erreichen eine Länge von bis zu 85 mm. Manche tragen segmentale helle Ringe oder Bänder, querverlaufende Streifen oder helle Längsrippen entlang der Seiten. Die für Pfauenspinner typischen Tuberkel sind gewöhnlich vorhanden, aber sehr klein und tragen ungefährliche Stachel. Die Puppen sind hart und sind an einer Seite an Blattstielen aufgehängt.[1]

Liste der Arten

Die Gattung Rothschildia wurde 1896 von Augustus Radcliffe Grote aufgestellt und umfasst etwa 100 Arten:[2] Die jüngst beschriebene ist Rothschildia anikae, 2002 von Meister und Brechlin in die Gattung Leucanella gestellt und 2010 in die Gattung Rothschildia aufgenommen. Die Artnamen sind größtenteils noch provisorisch.

Bedeutung

Rothschildia-Arten werden teilweise von Liebhabern gezüchtet[4]. Die Puppen von Rothschildia aurota wurden in Brasilien kommerziell zur Seidengewinnung genutzt[1].
