War Horse ist eine Anspielung auf das Buch mit dem gleichen Namen von dem renommierten Kinder-Schriftsteller Michael Morpurgo, das für die Bühne von Nick Stafford angepasst wurde. Ursprünglich dachte Morpurgo „sie müssen verrückt sein“ zu versuchen, ein Stück aus seinem Bestseller von 1982 zu machen. Das Schauspiel war jedoch sofort ein Erfolg. West-End- und Broadway-Produktionen werden von Marianne Elliott und Tom Morris geleitet, mit "Pferde-Choreographie" von Toby Sedgwick.

Synopse

In Devon bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges, 'Joey', Albert Narracotts geliebtes Pferd, wird an die Kavallerie verkauft und nach Frankreich verschifft. Joey dient in der britischen und der deutschen Armee, freundet sich mit 'Topthorn' (ein anderes Armee-Pferd) an, und gerät unter feindlichem Feuer in Gefangenschaft; Tod, Krankheit und Schicksal nehmen ihn auf eine außergewöhnliche Odyssee, dienen auf beiden Seiten, bevor sie allein im Niemandsland enden. Aber Albert kann Joey nicht vergessen, und noch nicht alt genug, um in die Armee einzutreten, begibt er sich auf eine gefährliche Mission, ihn zu finden, und bringt ihn zurück nach Devon.
