We Built This City ist ein Lied von der Gruppe Starship aus dem Jahr 1985, welches von Bernie Taupin, Peter Wolf, Martin Page und Dennis Lambert geschrieben wurde. Es erschien auf dem Album Knee Deep in the Hoopla.

Geschichte

We Built This City wurde weltweit am 30. August 1985 veröffentlicht und wurde ein Nummer-eins-Hit in den Vereinigte Staaten, in Australien und Kanada.

Das Lied wurde von den Starship-Mitgliedern Grace Slick und Mickey Thomas gesungen, die Rap-Strophe während des vorletztem Breaks wurde von Les Garland gesprochen. Im Rap wird ein Verkehrsunfall auf der George-Washington-Brücke beschrieben. Die Zeile Marconi plays the Mamba hat keine Konnotation, es wird nur auf den Mambo angespielt.

In einem Interview bei einem Radiosender mit Grace Slick wurde berichtet, dass der Song in den 1970er Jahren geschrieben wurde. Ursprünglich wurden als Titel The City in the Bay, The City That Rocks und The City That Never Sleeps vorgesehen.

Es wurde im April 2004 von der Zeitschrift Blender in der Liste „schlechtesten Songs aller Zeiten“ auf Platz 1 gewählt. In der Episode Afterschool Special von Drawn Together konnte man das Lied hören.
