Classical Gas

Classical Gas ist ein von Mason Williams komponiertes Instrumental-Musikstück. Ursprünglich trug das Stück den Titel „Classical Gasoline”, es wurde jedoch von Williams in „Classical Gas” umbenannt. Auf der Originalaufnahme spielt Williams die Gitarre und wird von einem Orchester unterstützt. Veröffentlicht wurde es im Februar 1968 auf dem Album The Mason Williams Phonograph Record. Im August 1968 erreichte „Classical Gas“ die Top 2[1] in den amerikanischen Charts und wurde über 1 Million Mal verkauft. Williams nahm die Melodie als Solo-Gitarrenstück erneut auf in seinem 1970 erschienenen Album „Hand Made”. Des Weiteren nahm er 1987 eine Version mit Mannheim Steamroller auf.

Auszeichnungen

  • 1968 gewann das Stück drei Grammyauszeichnungen: Beste Instrumentalkomposition, Beste zeitgenössisches Pop Darbietung, Instrumental und Bestes Instrumentalarrangement.[2]
  • 1998 verlieh ihm die US-Verwertungsgesellschaft Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) eine spezielle Auszeichnung. Das Stück würde über 5 Millionen Mal im Radio vorgespielt, um BMIs Allzeit Nummer eins instrumentale Komposition für Airplay Radio zu werden.[3]

Weitere Fakten

1973 wurde das Stück von Beggar’s Opera im Progressive Rock-Stil auf deren viertem Album Get Your Dog off Me! gecovert. Immer wieder taucht das Gerücht auf, dass Eric Clapton eine Version des Stückes aufgenommen hat, dies wurde jedoch von Williams selbst auf der offiziellen Website dementiert. Dieses Gerücht kam möglicherweise dadurch zustande, dass auf dem von Marc Shaiman und Eric Clapton komponierten Soundtrack zum Film „An deiner Seite“ ebenfalls eine Aufnahme des Stücks zu hören ist – hier handelt es sich jedoch um die 1970 von Mason Williams aufgenommene Akustikversion.[4]

Das Stück ist außerdem häufig in Fernsehserien und -filmen zu hören, so beispielsweise in je einer Folge der Serien „Die Simpsons“, „Frasier“ und „Wild Palms“.

Zur Bundestagswahl 1976 setzte die FDP Classical Gas in ihren TV-Wahlwerbespots ein.

Ebenfalls 1976 veröffentlichte der US-amerikanische Synthesizer-Pionier Larry Fast auf Sequencer, seinem zweiten unter dem Projektnamen Synergy erschienenen Soloalbum, eine Coverversion von „Classical Gas“[5]. Eine frühe Version dieses Titels ist auch auf der britischen Veröffentlichung (nicht aber der US-amerikanischen) seines Debüt-Albums Electronic Realizations For Rock Orchestra von 1975 enthalten[6].
