Bekannteste Arten sind der Atlantische Hering (Clupea harengus), der namengebend für die Familie ist, sowie die Sardine (Sardina pilchardus).
Es handelt sich um kleine Fische (30-40 cm), die in großen Schwärmen leben (Schwarmfisch) und im freien Wasser (Pelagial) durch die Meere ziehen. Von April bis Mitte Mai kommen sie zum Laichen in Flussmündungen und Buchten. Einige Arten, wie zum Beispiel der einheimische Maifisch (Alosa fallax) oder die Tanganjikasee-Sardine (Limnothrissa miodon), sind auch im Süßwasser zu finden. Heringe leben von Plankton.
