Coatlicue (Nahuatl etwa „Rock der Schlange“, auch bekannt als Tonantzín oder („unsere liebe Mutter“) Teteoinan („Die Mutter der Götter“) ist in der Mythologie der Azteken die Erdgöttin. Sie ist die Mutter von Huitzilopochtli, dem Kriegs- und Sonnengott. Sie ist auch bekannt als Toci („Unsere Großmutter“) und Cihuacoatl („Weibliche Schlange“), die Patronin der Frauen, die während der Geburt starben.

Coatlicue besitzt zudem weitere verschiedene Epitheta wie „Muttergöttin der Erde, die alle himmlischen Dinge gebiert“, „Göttin des Feuers und des Reichtums“, „Göttin des Lebens, des Todes und der Wiedergeburt“ und „Mutter der Südlichen Sterne“.

Sie wird dargestellt als eine Frau, die einen Rock aus sich krümmenden Giftschlangen und ein Halsband aus menschlichen Herzen, Händen und Schädeln trägt. Ihre Füße und Hände sind geschmückt mit Klauen (um Gräber zu graben), ihre Brüste werden als schlaff dargestellt, verursacht durch das Stillen.

Die meisten künstlerischen aztekischen Darstellungen dieser Göttin betonen ihren todbringenden Charakter, denn die Erde ist, ebenso wie eine liebende Mutter, auch ein unersättliches Monster, das alles Lebende verzehrt. Sie verkörpert die gierige Mutter, welche in der Gebärmutter sowie im Grab existent ist.
