Der Acheron River liegt in der Region Canterbury auf der Südinsel von Neuseeland. Er fließt vom Lake Lyndon südwärts in den Rakaia River.
Am Fluss wurden kleinere Kohlevorkommen gefunden. In den 1870er Jahren gab es einen Vorschlag, die Whitecliffs-Nebenbahn durch die Rakaia Gorge zum Acheron River zu verlängern, um Zugang zu den Kohlevorkommen zu erhalten. 1880 befürwortete eine königliche Kommission die Erweiterung, sie wurde jedoch nie realisiert.[1]
