Adam of the Petit Pont

Adam Parvipontanus (* 1105 in Balsham bei Cambridge; † 1181) war ein englischer Logiker und Philosoph. Er wurde auch genannt:

  • Adam of Balsam
  • Adam du Petit-Pont
  • Adamus Balsamiensis
  • Adam of the Petit Pont

In Paris studierte er mit Petrus Lombardus. Dort lehrte er auch an der Petit Pont das Trivium. Einer seiner Schüler war John of Salisbury. Es ist bekannt, dass er das Paradoxon "Der Lügner" analysierte.

Ihn interessierte auch das Problem der Definition einer Menge. Hier antizipierte er den Cantorschen Gedankengang über die Existenz einer Menge, die eine echte Teilmenge enthält, deren Mächtigkeit der Menge gleich ist.

Auch ist bekannt, dass er den Gedankengang von Richard Dedekind antizipierte, dass keine bijektive Abbildung einer endlichen Menge auf eine echte Teilmenge existiert. Er hat sich auch mit der Ersten Analytik von Aristoteles befasst, indem er einen Kommentar und eine partielle Bearbeitung verfasste.
