Ducking

Ducking ist ein Effekt, der in der Popmusik und hier insbesondere in der Dance-Music eingesetzt wird.

Dabei wird ein Signal langsam heruntergefahren und ebenso langsam durch ein neues Signal ersetzt. Dies geschieht mittels Kompressor (Musik) und wird auch Side-chain genannt. Es wird zum Beispiel dazu genutzt, den Gesang hervorzuheben, d.h. setzt die Stimme ein, wird die bis dahin dominante Musik automatisch heruntergefahren und umgekehrt, wenn gesanglich eine Pause eintritt. Die Regelung erfolgt automatisch durch sog. ADSR-Schaltungen (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release), die ihr Hüllkurvensignal aus dem Lautstärkewert des Gesangsmikrofons bilden und auf die Lautstärke der Musik anwenden.

Bei exzessivem Einsatz dieser Technik, insbesondere bei zu geringen ADSR-Zeitkonstanten für Sustain und Release, besteht aber die Gefahr, einen eigentlich als unangenehm empfundenen "Pump-Effekt" zu erzeugen. Versuche, diesen Effekt zu ästhetisieren, sind beispielsweise Call on me in der Version von Eric Prydz, Hung Up von Madonna oder "We like to duck" von Angry Dragons

Die Hardwareschmiede "Angry Dragons Inc." arbeitet derzeit an einem Duck-Pressor, um den exzessiven Gebrauch dieses Effekts salonfähig zu machen.
