African Political Systems

Das Buch African Political Systems („Politische Systeme Afrikas“), herausgegeben von den britischen Anthropologen Meyer Fortes und Edward E. Evans-Pritchard, zählt zu den modernen Klassikern der Sozialanthropologie. Das Werk erschien zuerst 1940.

An dem Werk wirkten führende Experten auf dem Gebiet der Sozialanthropologie mit. Die verschiedenen politischen Systeme afrikanischer Gesellschaften wurden darin einer vergleichenden Analyse unterzogen.

Das Buch ist das Ergebnis von Feldforschungen in acht afrikanischen Gesellschaften, die in weit auseinanderliegenden Gebieten Afrikas durchgeführt worden sind. Es ist ein Dokument der politischen Anthropologie, das eine erste Klassifikation von Systemen versucht und eine Theoretisierung von Modellen vorschlägt. Es werden die verschiedenen Typen sozialer Organisation beschrieben, wie sie bei einer Anzahl von afrikanischen Völkern angetroffen worden sind: bei den Zulu, Ngwato, Bemba, Ankole, Kede, Bantu Kavirondo, Tallensi und Nuer.

Meyer Fortes schrieb über die Tallensi, E. E. Evans-Pritchard über die Nuer, Max Gluckman über die Zulu, Audrey Richards über die Bemba, Isaac Schapera über die Ngwato, Kalervo Oberg über die Ankole, Siegfried Ferdinand Nadel über die Kede, Günter Wagner über die Bantu von Kavirondo (Logoli und Vugusu). Alfred Radcliffe-Brown trug das Vorwort bei, während Fortes und Evans-Pritchard das Einführungskapitel verfassten.
