Earl of Bedford

Die Titel Earl of Bedford oder Herzog von Bedford (nach dem Ort Bedford in England benannt) wurde in der Peerage of England mehrmals vergeben. Eine Verleihung ging im 14. Jahrhundert an Enguerrand VII. de Coucy, den Schwiegersohn des Königs Eduard III.. Später wurde ein Herzogtum Bedford für John of Lancaster, den dritten Sohn Heinrichs IV. und späteren Regenten Frankreichs, eingerichtet. Eine weitere Vergabe erfolgt 1470 an George Nevill, den Neffen von Richard Neville (genannt Warwick der Königsmacher), sowie für Jasper Tudor, den Onkel Heinrichs VII..

Heute hält die Familie Russell die Titel eines Earl und Herzog von Bedford. John Russell, ein enger Berater Heinrichs VIII. und Eduards VI. wurde 1551 zum Earl of Bedford ernannt, sein Nachkomme William, der 5. Earl, nach der Glorious Revolution zum Herzog.

Die untergeordneten Titel des Herzogs von Bedford (alle in der Peerage of England) sind: Marquess of Tavistock (1694), Earl of Bedford (1550), Baron Russell, of Cheneys (1539), Baron Russell of Thornhaugh in the County of Northampton (1603) und Baron Howland of Streatham in the County of Surrey (1695). Der Höflichkeitstitel des ältesten Sohnes des Herzogs ist Marquess of Tavistock.

Der Familiensitz ist Woburn Abbey bei Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.
