Earl of Lytton ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of the United Kingdom, benannt nach der Familie Bulwer-Lytton.

Stammsitz der Familie ist Knebworth House bei Knebworth in Hertfordshire.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde im Jahre 1880 für Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 2. Baron Lytton geschaffen. Dieser war zuvor Generalgouverneur und Vizekönig von Indien gewesen.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Mit der Earlswürde wurde gleichzeitig der Titel eines Viscount Knebworth verliehen, der ebenfalls zur Peerage of the United Kingdom gehört. Er wird vom Titelerben als Höflichkeitstitel geführt.

Der Vater des ersten Earls, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, war ein bekannter Parlamentsabgeordneter und Schriftsteller. Er wurde 1838 zum Baronet (of Knebworth) und 1866 zum Baron Lytton erhoben. Diese Titel gehören zur Baronetage bzw. Peerage of the United Kingdom.

Der vierte Earl, Noel Lytton, erbte 1957 von seiner Mutter Judith Blunt-Lytton, 16. Baroness Wentworth, den Titel eines Baron Wentworth, der nun ebenfalls ein nachgeordneter Titel der Earls of Lytton ist. Diese Würde, die zur Peerage of England gehört, wurde 1529 geschaffen.
