Edward Hyde, 3. Earl of Clarendon

Edward Hyde, 3. Earl of Clarendon (* 28. November 1661; † 31. Mai 1723 in London) war von 1702 bis 1708 Gouverneur von New York und New Jersey.

Hyde war während seiner Amtszeit extrem unbeliebt und pflegte einen aufwändigen Lebensstil, der ihn nach deren Ende in das Schuldgefängnis von New York brachte. Seine politischen Gegner kolportierten, er wäre nachts, aber auch zu offiziellen Anlässen in Frauenkleidern unterwegs gewesen. Dies scheint im Licht aktueller Geschichtsforschung eher üble Nachrede als die Wahrheit zu sein. 1709 ermöglichte ihm eine Erbschaft und die Übernahme des Titels als 3. Earl von Clarendon, sich aus der Schuldhaft freizukaufen und nach England zurückzukehren, wo er Mitglied des House of Lords wurde.
