Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) steht für Software-Vertrieb über das Internet. Bei der ESD wird die Software und/oder Software-Lizenzen online bestellt und bezahlt. Vorteil für den Käufer ist dabei, dass die Software mit relativ geringem Zeitaufwand gekauft, heruntergeladen und sofort eingesetzt werden kann. In den meisten Fällen werden auch keine Versandkosten fällig, da im Gegensatz zu Retailboxen oder Softwarelizenzen auf den Versand eines MediaKits (CD oder DVD) sowie auf ein physisches Handbuch verzichtet wird. Neben Software können auch andere digitale Produkte wie E-Books, Musik (zum Beispiel Mp3), Videos, Computerspiele und so weiter auf ESD-Basis im Internet angeboten werden. Mittelfristig bieten ESDs auch im Zusammenhang mit dem ständigen Ausbau der Bandbreiten im Internet eine umweltfreundliche und kostengünstige Alternative zu den Softwarepaketen/Boxen im Fachhandel. In den meisten Fällen werden ESDs erst beim Einsatz der Software registriert, wie dies bei handelsüblichen Boxen der Fall ist. ESDs sind daher auch einfacher handelbar als Lizenzen (auf den Endkunden registriertes Dokument mit Nutzungserlaubnis von Softwarebestandteilen), die in den meisten Fällen zum Zeitpunkt der Bestellung registriert werden müssen.
