Die Richtlinie 2001/29/EG zur Harmonisierung bestimmter Aspekte des Urheberrechts und der verwandten Schutzrechte in der Informationsgesellschaft (Urheberrechtsrichtlinie - UrhRil, im Engl. auch: European Union Copyright Directive - EUCD oder Information Society Directive bzw.InfoSoc-Richtlinie) setzt den WIPO-Urheberrechtsvertrag auf europäischer Ebene um.
Sie kann als europäische Entsprechung zum US-amerikanischen Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) gesehen werden.
EUCD und Open Source
Die Urheberrechtsrichtlinie hat auch einen Einfluss im Bereich der Open Source bzw. Freien Software. Durch den Schutz der Urheberrechte einerseits werden nun teilweise die Nutzungsrechte eingeschränkt, so dass es zu Konflikten kommen kann, die die Veröffentlichung insbesondere von Programmbibliotheken beeinträchtigt. Beispielsweise würde die Nutzung von DVD-Abspielsoftware in manchen Fällen illegal werden.
