Das Bundesamt für Zivilluftfahrt, kurz BAZL (französisch Office fédéral de l'aviation civile (OFAC), italienisch Ufficio federale dell'aviazione civile (UFAC), englisch Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA)) ist in der Schweiz innerhalb des Eidgenössischen Departements für Umwelt, Verkehr, Energie und Kommunikation (UVEK) für die Regulierung der und die Aufsicht über die zivile Luftfahrt zuständig. Zur zivilen Luftfahrt in diesem Sinn zählen das Personal (unter anderem Flugverkehrsleiter und Piloten), die Fluggeräte (unter anderem Verkehrsflugzeuge und Ballone) sowie die Infrastruktur (im Wesentlichen die Flughäfen).
In Ergänzung dazu betreut das BAZL die internationalen Kontakte der Schweiz im Bereich der Aviatik, beispielsweise bei den zahlreichen Luftverkehrsabkommen mit anderen Staaten.
2004 verfügt das BAZL über ein Budget von 75 Millionen Schweizer Franken und kommt seinen Aufgaben mit 194 Arbeitsstellen nach. Sitz des BAZL ist Ittigen.
Schweizer Luftfahrt in Zahlen
2003 zählte die Schweiz drei Landesflughäfen,11 Regionalflughäfen, 44 Flugplätze und 26 Flugfelder für Helikopter. In diesem Rahmen waren zwei Linienfluggesellschaften, 150 Nichtlinienfluggesellschaften, 87 Unterhaltsbetriebe und 150 Flugschulen tätig.
Im schweizerischen Luftfahrzeugregister waren 2003 1952 Flächenflugzeuge (1992 im Vorjahr), 280 Helikopter (265), 259 Motorsegelflugzeuge (260), 1000 Segelflugzeuge (1016), 474 Ballone (490) und 7 Luftschiffe (7) eingetragen. Geflogen wurden diese von 6673 Privatpiloten (6294), 1190 Berufspiloten (1399), 2094 Linienpiloten (2185), 980 Helikopterpiloten (950), 2871 Segelflugpiloten (2977) und 394 Ballonfahrern (427).
