Biografie

Florence and The Machine am Shoreditch Festival 2007

Aufgewachsen in Camberwell, Südlondon besuchte sie das dortige Camberwell College of Arts, an welchem sie jedoch ihre Ausbildung abbrach, um sich ihrer Musikkarriere zu widmen.

Bekannt wurde sie insbesondere durch ihre Auftritte beim BBC Introducing am SXSW am 13. März 2008 sowie als Vorband für MGMT. Es folgten Auftritte bei Musikfestivals in Glastonbury, Reading und Leeds.

Zur Zeit arbeitet sie mit dem Produzenten Kid Harpoon an ihrem Debutalbum. Gemanagt wird sie von Mairead Nash von den Queens Of Noize. Am 18. Februar 2009 wurde ihr der zweite "Critics Choice" Brit Award (den ersten erhielt 2008 die Sängerin Adele) verliehen, der nur Künstlern zuerkannt wird, die noch kein Debutalbum veröffentlicht haben.

Im Januar und Februar 2009 ist sie außerdem neben Friendly Fires, Glasvegas und White Lies im Line-Up der NME-Awards-Tour des britischen Musikmagazins "New Music Express" vertreten[3].

Musik

Ihre Musik kann als Indiepop bezeichnet werden, sie selbst bezeichnet ihre Musik als "die Musik, die Lily [Allen] oder Kate [Nash] machen würden, wenn sie eingeschlossen in einem Käfig voller Schlangen im Keller eines Beerdigungsinstituts in Louisiana aufgewachsen wären" (She makes the kind of music Lily or Kate would make if they'd grown up locked in a cage full of snakes in the basement of a Louisiana funeral home[4]). Ihre Texte sind voller Sarkasmus und Ironie. Sie tritt oft zusammen mit einem Gitarristen und einem Drummer auf, manchmal aber auch nur mit einer Trommel oder einem umgedrehten Mülleimer.

Ihre Songs schrieb sie zusammen mit dem Blur-Bassisten Alex James. Kiss with a Fist erscheint in einem aktuellen TV-Werbeclip von Vodafone. Am 3. Juli 2009 wird ihr Debut-Album Lungs erscheinen.
