Francesco Barocius

Franciscus Barocius oder Francesco Barozzi (* 9. September 1537 in Iraklio; † 23. November 1604 in Venedig) war italienischer Mathematiker, Übersetzer und Späthumanist in der Renaissance.

Leben

Der Sohn eines vermögenden venezianischen Edelmanns studierte in Padua unter anderem Mathematik und lebte später größtenteils in Venedig. Bekannt wurde er durch seine lateinischen Übersetzungen der Werke antiker Mathematiker, darunter diejenige des Kommentars des Proklos Diadochus zum ersten Buch der Elemente von Euklid (1560). 1586 veröffentlichte er ein eigenes Werk über Asymptoten, in dem er einen Kegelschnittzirkel beschrieb. Zweimal musste er sich vor der Inquisition wegen Zauberei verantworten. Letztlich wurde er zur Stiftung von Silberkreuzen im Wert von 100 Dukaten verurteilt. 1604 starb er an einem Schlaganfall.

Der Mondkrater Barocius ist nach ihm benannt.
