Die Free Software Foundation Europe (kurz FSFE) nahm am 10. März 2001 offiziell ihre Arbeit als europäische Schwesterorganisation der US-amerikanischen Free Software Foundation auf.

Finanziell, juristisch und personell unabhängig und organisatorisch der nordamerikanischen FSF gleichgestellt, kümmert sie sich um alle Belange von freier Software mit Schwerpunkt Europa. Gemeinsam mit anderen Free Software Foundations kümmert sie sich um die globalen Perspektiven und hat beispielsweise sehr starke Verbindungen nach Asien und Südamerika.

Die Free Software Foundation Europe ist eine gemeinnützige, regierungsunabhängige Organisation. Ihr Präsident ist Karsten Gerloff, der im Juni 2009 Georg Greve in seinem Amt ablöste.[1] Deutschland-Koordinator ist Matthias Kirschner. Die Koordination in Österreich erfolgt durch Peter Bubestinger. [2]

2010 erhielt die FSFE die Theodor Heuss Medaille für vorbildliches demokratisches Verhalten[3][4]
