Die Bevölkerungszahl beträgt ca. 5.000 (2006). Rund die Hälfte der Menschen des Staates Tuvalu leben auf dem Atoll Funafuti. Damit ist es das am dichtesten bevölkerte Atoll des Landes. Das Atoll umfasst 33 Inseln, die die TeNamo-Lagune umgeben, die mit 275 km² weitaus größte Lagune in Tuvalu, gefolgt von der Lagune des Atolls Nukufetau mit 142 km²[1]. Die Landfläche von Funafuti liegt dagegen mit 2,8 km² im Mittelfeld der neun Inseln bzw. Atollen Tuvalus.
Die größte bewohnte Insel ist Fongafale im Osten des Atolls, mit dem Dorf Vaiaku (516 Einwohner) als Regierungssitz. Manchmal werden Fongafale oder Vaiaku als Hauptstadt angegeben, jedoch bildet das gesamte Atoll Funafuti die offizielle Hauptstadt.
