Mit den drei Basis-Farbreizen lassen sich nur die Farben im bunten Dreieck erreichen.

Der Gamut (englisch Tonleiter, Skala, Farbpalette) ist die Menge aller Farben, die ein Gerät (z. B. ein Monitor, Drucker, Scanner, Film) darstellen, wiedergeben bzw. aufzeichnen kann. Formal ist der Gamut der Körper im Farbraum, der mit dem Gerät durch innere Farbmischung nachgestellt werden kann.

Übersicht

An einem CIE-Chromatizitätsdiagramm wird dargestellt, dass mit den drei definierten Farben nur die Farbreize, die innerhalb des Dreiecks (Gamut) liegen, wiedergegeben werden können. Die Farbreize im grauen Feld können nicht mit diesen Basisfarben dargestellt werden.

Die zweite Abbildung zeigt den Gamut eines sRGB-Bildschirms als transparenten Körper und den Gamut einer Offset-Druckmaschine (CMYK, ISO Coated) als Gitternetz im CIELAB-Farbraum. Unten im Bild sind die von Grün nach Rot verlaufende a*-Achse und die von Blau nach Gelb verlaufende b*-Achse des L*a*b*-Farbraums zu sehen. Sie schneiden sich mit der senkrecht von schwarz nach weiß verlaufenden Helligkeitsachse L*.

Farben, die ein Gerät nicht darstellen kann bzw. die innerhalb eines Farbmodells nicht dargestellt werden können, liegen außerhalb seines Gamuts. Das gesättigte, helle Grün des Monitors kann der Drucker nicht darstellen, es erreicht aber auch bei weitem nicht die Grüntöne der Natur. Ein weiteres Beispiel ist das pure Rot des RGB-Farbraums, welches im CMYK-Modell außerhalb seines Gamuts liegt.

Eine wesentliche Aufgabe des Farbmanagements besteht darin, die Gamuts verschiedener Geräte so aufeinander abzubilden, dass möglichst wenig störende Farbverschiebungen und Abrisse entstehen. Diesen Vorgang nennt man Gamut-Mapping, und er erfolgt mittels Farbprofilen. Die zu verwendende Gamut-Mapping-Methode legt der Benutzer durch die Wahl eines Rendering Intents fest.
