Glomus caroticum

Das Glomus caroticum (von lateinisch glomus „Knäuel“ und griechisch kara „Kopf“) ist ein kleines, knötchenförmiges Organ an der Aufzweigung der Arteria carotis communis (Halsschlagader). Es handelt sich um ein Paraganglion mit Chemorezeptoren, die den Sauerstoff- und Kohlendioxid-Partialdruck sowie den pH-Wert des Blutes registrieren.

Das Glomus caroticum wird vom Ramus sinus carotici des Nervus glossopharyngeus, von Ästen des Nervus vagus und von sympathischen Fasern vom Ganglion cervicale superius innerviert. Diese Nervenfasern leiten die Impulse zum Kreislauf- und Atemzentrum in die Medulla oblongata (verlängertes Mark). Bei Abnahme des Sauerstoffgehalts oder Zunahme des Kohlendioxidgehalts im Blut wird reflektorisch die Atemfrequenz und -tiefe erhöht.

Glomera mit ähnlichen Funktionen gibt es auch in der Wand der großen Herzgefäße (Glomus aorticum in der Aorta, Glomus pulmonale am Lungenarterienstamm).

Gelegentlich treten Tumoren des Glomus caroticum auf (Glomangiom).
