Greater Manchester ist ein Metropolitan County und umfasst in etwa den Ballungsraum Manchester. Das County liegt in der Region North West England und hat ca. 2,6 Mio. Einwohner.
Greater Manchester grenzt an Cheshire, Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Lancashire und Merseyside. Es besteht aus zehn Metropolitan Boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford und Wigan.
Geschichte
Vor 1974 war das Gebiet des heutigen Greater Manchester zwischen Cheshire und Lancashire aufgeteilt. Kleinere Teile von West Riding of Yorkshire und Derbyshire gehörten ebenfalls dazu. Im Zuge der Kommunalreform wurde dann das Metropolitan County Greater Manchester gebildet, dessen Verwaltungssitz in Manchester war. Die Grafschaftsverwaltung wurde jedoch 1986 abgeschafft; seitdem nehmen die Metropolitan boroughs ihre Verwaltungsaufgaben selbständig wahr; Greater Manchester ist aber weiterhin eine zeremonielle Grafschaft.
