Ground Truth

Ground Truth (übersetzt in etwa „Bodenwahrheit“) bezeichnet in der Fernerkundung und Kartografie direkt durch Geländeerkundung am Boden aufgenommene Informationen (Bodenproben, Fotos, Vegetationsbestimmung etc.), die zur Analyse von Luftaufnahmen, Satellitenbildern oder anderen Fernerkundungsdaten genutzt werden.

Durch Ground-Truth-Daten ist es möglich, Fernerkundungsdaten präziser zu klassifizieren. Wenn man nur mit Fernerkundungsdaten arbeitet, können diese Daten oft mehrdeutig sein. Zum Beispiel könnte es Probleme bei der Unterscheidung von Mais-Feldern und Sonnenblumen-Feldern geben, weil beide auf Fernerkundungsdaten ähnliche Merkmalsausprägungen haben. Die aufgezeichneten Informationen lassen sich also erst besser zuordnen, wenn man an einigen Stellen im Gelände über Ground-Truth-Daten verfügt und so die erfassten Fernerkundungsdaten mit zusätzlichen Informationen besser klassifizieren kann.

Ground-Truth-Daten können vor, während oder nach einer Befliegungskompanie aufgenommen werden. Die Ground-Truth-Daten werden zur Stützung und Validierung der Klassifikation von Bilddaten verwendet.
