Head & Shoulders ist ein von Procter & Gamble produziertes Shampoo gegen Schuppen.

Procter & Gambles Forscher entschieden sich im Jahr 1950, ein neues Antischuppenshampoo zu entwickeln, als klar wurde, dass die damaligen Produkte auf dem Markt nicht gegen Kopfhautprobleme halfen. Beinahe ein Jahrzehnt wurde an einer neuen Formel geforscht, die zum ersten mal den Stoff Zink-Pyrithion enthielt.

Head & Shoulders wurde 1961 das erste mal dem US-Markt vorgestellt. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Shampoos gab es bis in die späten 1990er von Head & Shoulders relativ wenige Variationen. Heute gibt es über zehn verschiedene Arten von Shampoo, die für verschiedene Haartypen geeignet sind. Von da an hatte die Marke mehr Erfolg und wuchs schließlich zu einem Großunternehmen. Die Verantwortlichen waren Robert Jongstra (Procter & Gamble Geschäftsführer) und Olga Barr (Saatchi & Saatchi Kreativdirektor).

Eine Studie, ausgeführt vom medizinischen Zentrum der Universität Lüttich, erwies, dass der Wirkstoff Zink-Pyrithion (Head & Shoulders) gegenüber dem Wirkstoff der Konkurrenz, Ketoconazol, in der Behandlung von Schuppen etwas weniger wirksam ist.[1]
