Hints (engl.: Hinweis) sind spezielle Anweisungen, die in Outline-Schriftarten gespeichert werden, um deren Darstellung auf Ausgabegeräten mit geringer Auflösung, wie z. B. Bildschirmen zu verbessern. Ziel des Hintings ist es, die Lesbarkeit der gerenderten Zeichen zu erhalten, selbst wenn durch die niedrige Auflösung des Ausgabegeräts (ca. 75 bis 150 dpi bei aktuellen Bildschirmen gegenüber ca. 600 dpi bei heutigen Laserdruckern) nicht genügend Pixel zur exakten Darstellung des Zeichens vorhanden sind.

Die Hints werden nur bei Unterschreitung eines gewissen Mindest-Schriftgrades (z. B. 8 Punkt) ausgewertet. Dabei wird in Kauf genommen, dass spezifische Eigenarten der Schrift (typisches Aussehen der Zeichen) bei Verwendung der Hints eingeschränkt werden, so dass verschiedene Schriften bei sehr kleinem Schriftgrad sehr ähnlich aussehen können, auch wenn diese bei größeren Schriftgraden deutlich divergieren.

Das Erstellen von Hints ist ein sehr aufwändiger Vorgang, der zur Erreichung bester Darstellungsqualität manuell durchgeführt wird. Viele kostenlos erhältliche oder preisgünstigere Schriften verfügen über kein Hinting oder nur über ein von Schriften-Tools erzeugtes automatisches Hinting (Auto-Hinting).

Neben den manuell erstellten, in Schriftart-Dateien (englisch font file) selbst abgelegten Hints, ist Subpixel-Hinting (wie z. B. ClearType oder CoolType) eine Methode, die über Farb-Antialiasing die Kanten der Schrift für das Auge glättet. Subpixel-Hinting wird zum Zeitpunkt der Darstellung der Schrift auf Farb-Display eingesetzt und muss an die Eigenheiten des spezifischen Geräts angepasst werden.
