International House

Ein International House ist ein ursprünglich aus den USA stammendes akademisches Wohnheim, in welchen einheimische und ausländische Studierende zusammenleben.

Die Idee des International House geht zurück auf Harry Edmonds; dieser hatte - so die Gründungslegende - 1909 einen chinesischen Kommilitonen gegrüßt, worauf dieser bemerkte, Edmonds sei seit drei Wochen der erste gewesen, der ihn angesprochen hätte. Betroffen von diesem Einsamkeits-Erlebnis beschloss Edmonds, ausländische Studierende mit Einheimischen in Kontakt zu bringen. Die gemeinsame gemischte Unterkunft, verbunden mit organisierten Aktivitäten, ist das Grundkonzept der International Houses.

Finanziert von Dodge und Rockefeller eröffnete 1924 das erste International House (kurz: I-House) in New York City. Der erste Ableger von diesem Stammhaus entstand 1930 in Berkeley (Kalifornien). Zu seinen berühmtesten Bewohnern gehört John Kenneth Galbraith. Ein weiterer Alumnus ist der Ökologe Richard N. Goldman (Akademisches Jahr 1941/1942).

Mittlerweile gibt es mehr als ein Dutzend International Houses weltweit.
