Die American Academy of Arts and Sciences wurde 1780 während des Unabhängigkeitskrieges in Cambridge (Massachusetts) u. a. von John Adams, James Bowdoin und John Hancock gegründet, um eine geistige Elite aus Gebildeten, Mitgliedern der Regierung und wirtschaftlichen Größen im Interesse der Weiterentwicklung der jungen Republik zusammenzuführen. Die Gesellschaft vergibt seit 1839 an in den USA tätige Wissenschaftler den Rumford-Preis für Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Wärmelehre und Optik.
„...to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honour, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.“ (aus der Charta).
Heute hat die Akademie zwei Funktionen:
- Personen von überragender Begabung aus Wissenschaft, Ausbildung, Wirtschaft und Kunst auszuwählen und
- ein vielschichtiges Programm von Projekten und Studien zum Nutzen der Menschheit durchzuführen.
Jüngere Projekte der Akademie konzentrierten sich auf den Bedarf an Bildung und Forschung und auf das Wohlergehen der verschiedenen Menschengruppen innerhalb der Vereinigten Staaten.
