Kanauj

Kannauj (Hindi: कन्नौज) ist eine alte Stadt im indischen Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh mit 71.530 Einwohnern (Zensus 2001). Sie ist das administrative Zentrum eines gleichnamigen Distrikts. Die Stadt liegt am Ganges. In früheren Zeiten war sie die Hauptstadt großer Hindu-Reiche, etwa von Harshavardhana und den Pratihara. Mit der Zerstörung durch Mahmud von Ghazni begann 1018 ihr Niedergang.
