Kia ora

Kia ora [kĩora] ist eine der traditionellen Begrüßungen der Māori, das indigene Volk Neuseelands.

Die Wendung hat Eingang in das Neuseeländische Englisch gefunden und ist heute selbstverständlicher Bestandteil der Alltagssprache. Es wird sowohl zur Begrüßung als auch zum Abschied verwendet. Wörtlich bedeutet Kia ora in etwa Mögest du gesund sein oder möge es dir gutgehen.

Unter den Maori selbst wird Kia ora auch im Sinne von Danke schön oder auch als zustimmendes Wort beim Zuhören Anderer benutzt.

Die Wendung ist so populär, dass sie inzwischen oft im Namen eines Unternehmens zu finden ist (zum Beispiel Hotels), aber auch in Markennamen.
