M-prize

Der Preis der Methusalem-Maus (oder Methuselah Mouse Prize, M Prize) ist ein Wettbewerbspreis für Forscher, die versuchen, die Lebensdauer von Hausmäusen künstlich zu verlängern. Dabei sollen Erkenntnisse auch über den menschlichen Alterungsprozess gefunden werden. Das Wort leitet sich vom biblischen Methusalem ab, dem ein hohes Alter zugeschrieben wurde. Dem entsprechend ist eine Methusalemmaus eine Maus sehr hohen Mäuse-Alters.

Der Preis ist 2003 von Aubrey de Grey erdacht und gegründet worden. Er ist vom Ansari X-Prize inspiriert und mit derzeit über vier Millionen US-Dollar dotiert, die als Spenden gesammelt worden sind.

Jeder neue Langlebigkeitsrekord wird prämiert nach der Formel \frac{Y}{X+Y} \times Gesamtpreisgeld, wobei X der bisherige Altersrekord ist und X + Y der neue in Tagen. Eine Verdopplung des bisherigen Altersrekordes würde also den halben Jackpot gewinnen. Ein zweiter Preis ist gedacht für Forscher, die die Mäuse erst in höherem Lebensalter behandelt haben.

Aktueller Langlebigkeitsrekord

Derzeit (März 2007) steht der Rekord bei 1819 Tagen (knapp 5 Jahre) nach einer Genmanipulation.[1] Die normale Lebenserwartung für den verwendeten Mäusestamm liegt bei rund drei Jahren.

Gefördert werden sollen Forschungsvorhaben mit dem Ziel, die menschliche Lebenserwartung zu erhöhen, den Alterungsprozess zu bremsen und die Alterskrankheiten zu besiegen. Entsprechende Forschungsfelder sind die Gerontologie und die Biogerontologie.
